A young man (19) was referred to us as he was about to age out of another program. The young man realised he had a cocaine problem impacting his studies and personal life, so he reached out to a college advisor at 19 years old. His cocaine use began 18 months prior when his social life led him to nightclubs, where alcohol use escalated to drug use.
Our counsellor began working with him in December. They built trust by openly discussing potential triggers for drug use, and the counsellor shared relevant lived experience. The young man finds it easier to communicate openly during face-to-face sessions that involve another activity, like playing golf, as he has ADHD.
Since starting the program, his cocaine use has decreased significantly (previously 3-4 times a week) although there have been two relapses. He remains committed to staying drug-free with our support and his family's help. The young man now works part-time at a restaurant while continuing his studies, aiming for a future in sports coaching.
His parents (39 and 43) and his sibling (22) are also involved. His mother receives bi-weekly coaching sessions, and both parents meet with the counsellor to gain perspective on the situation. They report this has improved family dynamics and helped repair a strained relationship.
